Dr. Charity Low

FAMILY PHYSICIAN who performs minor surgeries

FCFPS, FAMS, FRACGP, GDMH, Dip Derm, MBBS

My Journey
In Medicine

Dr Charity Low graduated with the Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore in 1994. She gained a wide repertoire of clinical experiences from varied disciplines in hospital: General Medicine, Paediatrics, Geriatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopedics, Hand Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Emergency Medicine, Blood Bank, School Health etc. These foundational years built up in her the rigour and resilience of medical training. With a well-rounded multi-disciplinary appreciation, she embarked into the arena of primary care, both in the public and private sectors before finally setting up this clinic of her own.

While serving the community, she has continued in professional development, in learning, teaching and research. She is an adjunct tutor for the 3 local medical schools, assisting also as an examiner for Years 2, 3 and 4. She obtained her Masters in Family Medicine in 2006 and Fellowships subsequently.

She has conducted a research validating PHQ-9 and QIDS-SR as screening tools for depression in local primary care clinic (2011). Currently, polyclinics in Singapore is still utilising PHQ-9 for the screening of depression. She has joined the REACH program since 2007 and contributed to AMS-MOH Clinical Practice Guidelines on ADHD (2014).

She enjoys crystallising basic medical concepts. Whatever she learns, she shares. One of the few local GP clinics with Bedside Ultrasound, she presented at "Ultrasound --- The Second Stethoscope" (2019) her ultrasound learning journey. Contributing to the mental health fraternity, she was supported by like-minded colleagues and formed the VASE (Video Assisted SElf learning of mental health conditions) team. So far, they have made 5 mental health videos for busy GPs! This was her capstone project for the Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Certificate Course.

She was presented with Distinguished Educators' Award, by the College of Family Physician at World Family Doctors' Day (2019). During the COVID-19 pandemic, while medical students were barred from the frontline, she persevered in teaching them via video-conferencing of ongoing patient consultations in her clinic. They were together given the NUS Medicine Fortitude Award (2020).

Always and ever learning, she upgraded her surgical skills with the Professional & Advanced Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine (2022) when she resided in Australia for a stint.

To give back to the community, she has participated as a volunteer doctor accompanying the NUS medical students to Cambodia on Project Sai'Bai for a few years. Her portable ultrasound and bedside sonographic skills certainly came in handy in these remote villages!

This is in brief, her exquisite journey as a GP!
